Soft Place to Land is a cross between a lullaby and a prayer for healthy, all-out love between strong people, free of the limits set by traditional ideas of gender. Temperance is a fluid card, advocating for the strength of the middle path and blending opposite energies. An angelic figure stands with one foot in a river and one foot on solid ground, balancing between flow and firmness. We temper metal and glass so they will withstand greater wear, but temper has another meaning: unchecked anger. Rage is often associated as a toxically masculine trait, culturally designated as the only acceptable expression of feeling from men. Both card and song call for a gentler way. In the modern world, the adherence to binaries has been destabilizing, pushing people further from mutual understanding, leaving us unable to listen or comprehend the beauty of a full spectrum, or hold the truth of multiple perspectives. But the alchemy of life shows us that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Diversity is the key to stability. To restore balance within and with others, it is essential to come back to one another calmly, as willingly vulnerable partners in relationship. Can we accept “and” over “or” and find peace? Wise and learning. Ready and patient. Strong and soft. We need each other.
